Colour management may seem like a black art and has become the hot talking point for photographers. Many computer users suffer the frustration of prints that do not match what they see on their monitors; or unexpected colour casts when they try new brands of inkjet paper. This course will demystify the subject of colour management with a step-by-step guide on how to get predicable results from digital workflows, from camera or scanner through to print.

There are lots of calibration hardware solutions on offer; inkjet printers can now deliver accurate colour; the Internet is full of handy tips on how to configure your software and there’s lots of discussion about which colour space to use.

This course will benefit anyone who has to process digital images, and will outline how to get accurate results, not just from your studio equipment but from photographic laboratories, lithographic print and on colour aware web browsers.

Written and delivered by Mark Wood (a digital imaging consultant with many years of experience teaching photography and reprographics to the design industry and in universities), this course will outline colour management in an accessible manner; pitched to meet individual delegate requirements.

Course Contents:

* Setting system and application colour preferecnes: sRGB, Adobe RGB (1998), CMYK and LAB
* System optimisation and profile selection
* How to embed colour profiles: to enable the accurate translation of images through your workflow.
* Converting images using appropriate ICC profiles
* Setting the correct rendering intent.
* Calibrating monitors and printers using calibration hardware
* Softproofing and printing
* Proving colour accuracy to third parties, such as a photography laboratory or print house

Course Prerequisites: basic knowledge of Apple Mac or PC operating systems

Learning & Teaching: tutor demonstrations using Apple Mac, PowerPoint and design software (PC systems discussed). Delegates use tutorial images on individual Mac workstations in a series of practical exercises to learn and evaluate colour management techniques.
